A mountain-view retreat built for a swim family

Tucked into the town of Niwot, Colorado, just outside Longmont, this backyard already had the hard part covered: a stunning Front Range mountain backdrop, a spacious lot and a beautifully established patio with an outdoor kitchen and hot tub. What it needed was a pool that could match that setting without overwhelming it. Leisure Pools Front Range delivered exactly that with The Wave 40 in Graphite Grey.

The right pool model for a family of swimmers

The homeowners wanted more than a place to cool off. With a daughter who swims competitively and parents who swim themselves, they needed a true lap lane alongside space to relax and entertain. The Wave 40 was a natural fit. Its rounded splash deck corners create a resort feel on one side while a full, uninterrupted swim lane runs the length of the pool on the other, giving the family room to train and room to unwind in the same design.

At the time, The Wave was still a newer addition to the Leisure Pools lineup, and this installation was one of the dealer’s earliest projects with the model, a detail that made the finished result even more rewarding for the team.

A pool designed to look like it was always there

Rather than treating the pool as a standalone addition, the design team built it to feel contiguous with everything already in the yard. Mature, established landscaping surrounded the space, and the goal from day one was to make the pool look like it had been part of the backyard for years, not a few months. Sitting and retaining walls were added along both edges of the layout, finished in a stone chosen to echo the material already on the home. Concrete pavers and light-colored coping tie the hardscape together while keeping the deck cooler underfoot.

Interestingly, the retaining wall on one side was a practical necessity, built to hold back a natural slope in the yard. The other side didn’t need retaining at all, but the team added a matching wall anyway to keep the layout visually balanced, a small decision that made a big difference in the finished look.

Water features and finishing touches

Three sheer descents anchor the water feature design, joined by a bubbler built into the splash deck and color-changing LED lighting for evening use. The pool runs on a saltwater system with Hayward equipment and is fully heated for extended-season swimming. An Integra automatic pool cover rounds out the build, adding both safety and easy maintenance for the family.

Getting the pool into a landlocked backyard

Access was one of the project’s bigger logistical puzzles. With no direct route into the backyard, the crew removed a section of fencing and brought the crane in along the side yard instead of over the house. The ground itself cooperated: the lot was relatively flat, with no rock to contend with, which kept excavation straightforward even as the design called for additional retaining walls.

The team behind the build

Leisure Pools Front Range, doing business as Northern Colorado Pools, is owned by Andrew Glasspole, with day-to-day leadership from Tara Tecu and her husband, Kirk, who serves as the company’s operations lead. The local team also includes an in-office permitting specialist and a dedicated field operations lead on-site throughout the build. Beyond pools, the company handles full outdoor living projects, including hardscape, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, and pergolas, giving homeowners a single team to design an entire backyard rather than just the pool at its center.
